The European Confederation of Directors' Associations (ecoDa) is a not-for-profit association founded in December 2004 under the laws of Belgium.
Its objective is to represent the views of company directors from EU member states to corporate governance policy-makers at EU level
Some words from the founders
« ecoDa must be the place where all national institutes of directors within the European Union feel they can really make a difference. We have a great opportunity to influence policies and inform European decision-makers about our proposals on corporate governance» Miles Templeman, Honorary Administrator
«Professional associations have an increasingly important role to play in civil society. By their membership of these director's institutes our members constitute a real network of citizens committed to ensuring that business recognises its responsibilities », Pierre Klees, Former Chairman and Director of ecoDa.
« ecoDa will be a new partner representing directors within the European stakeholders' debate. Ecoda will give director the opportunity to play their full part on the EU's work on corporate governance. Working together with colleagues from different Member States will be the best way to ensure that the Director's voice is heard. ecoDa has an essential role to play », Daniel Lebègue, Former Chairman and Director of ecoDa.

ecoDa has elaborated a response to the European Commission’s Green Paper on corporate governance in financial institutions and
remuneration policies.
With this text ecoDa wishes to stress the importance of differentiating between the governance frameworks that are required in the financial and non-financial sectors. Whereas stricter regulation for systemic banks can certainly be defended, governance arrangements of non-financial institutions should primarily arise from a dialogue between boards and shareholders. There can be no presumption that the recommendations of the Green Paper should apply as such to non-financial companies.

NEW ecoDa endorses the efforts of its national institutes to raise standards in the certification of director training
ecoDa believes that director education is an essential means of improving the effectiveness of national corporate governance systems.
The potential impact of director training on board behavior and director professionalism cannot be underestimated. It is no less important than efforts to establish an effective regulatory framework for boards through corporate governance codes and other legislative measures.
Consequently, director training should be given a high priority in efforts to improve the overall performance and legitimacy of corporate governance.
A key role of ecoDa's member institutes is to certify / accredit programs of director training and ongoing professional development within their respective countries. ecoDa fully supports the efforts of its national institutes of directors in this activity.
In line with many national Corporate Governance Codes and the OECD Principles, ecoDa recognises the following key pillars of certification, each of which seeks to build empowered boards and develop the competencies of individual board members: high quality education programs with a focus on the specific professionnal needs; examination of competencies and continuing education processes; and measures to secure the commitment of directors to relevant codes of professional conduct.
ecoDa believes that national certification programs are best run and overseen by independent, non-profit organizations, such as established national directors' organizations, using the best educational resources available.
Board and director professionalism has never been more important. ecoDa fully endorses the efforts of its national institutes to raise standards in the certification of director training. They represent a crucial component of ecoDa's broader mission to raise overall standards of corporate governance in Europe. |
